Atrangi Re Movie Review: Even the love triangle of Sara, Dhanush and Akshay did not work, the story of ‘Chakachak’ turned out to be poor

Smita Srivastava, Mumbai. As a director, Aanand L Rai has given hits like Raanjhanaa, Tanu Weds Manu, Tanu Weds Manu Returns. The story of all these films was written by Himanshu Sharma. These small town stories have been around love and marriage. Now this Jugal Jodi’s film Atrangi Re has been released on Disney Plus Hotstar. The trailer of this film was well-liked. But this trailer was cut so clearly that the real issue of the film was nowhere to be seen in it.

The story begins with Rinku (Sara Ali Khan) running away from home in Siwan, Bihar and her relatives running after her. She reaches the station in this Bhagadori. Meanwhile, S Venkatesh Vishwanath Iyer aka Vishu Babu (Dhanush) gets off the train with friends. There he sees Rinku hitting him by throwing a bottle. On returning home, Rinku’s maternal grandmother (Seema Biswas) beats her with slippers. Rinku’s words reveal that she has run away from home with her lover many times before. She falls in love with the magician Sajjad Ali (Akshay Kumar). Nani is deeply disturbed by the actions of orphan Rinku. She tells Rinku to get married in two days. Vishu Babu is kidnapped and forcibly married to Rinku on the lines of Pakdwa marriage prevalent in Bihar. Whereas Vishu, who studied medicine in Delhi, has to get engaged after a week. On reaching Delhi, Rinku tells her to go with her boyfriend. She also goes to his engagement with Vishu and dances fiercely. There are many twists and turns in this love story of Rinku. In this, the aspect related to Sara’s life may surprise some people.

Aanand L Rai has directed Atrangi Re after the film Zero, released in the year 2018. In Atrangi Re, Himanshu and Aanand L Rai have not been able to do justice to any issue in their attempt to cover up issues like pakadwa marriage, interracial marriage, honor killing, mental illness. The author has not even bothered to make the film logical. Himanshu needs in-depth research on the medical world. There is a lot of drama in the film, but the tide of emotions does not erupt anywhere. The affair of Vishu and his girlfriend is wrapped up in a hurry. The way Rinku’s mental problem was diagnosed is indigestion. In a scene in the film, Vishu expresses his feelings to Rinku in Tamil. In the recently released Hollywood film West Side Story, the Spanish dialogue subtitles were not given. Director Steven Spielberg wanted the audience to understand those sentiments. Aanand L Rai has done the same experiment in Atrangi Re.

In a scene when Vishu narrates his pain in Tamil language, subtitles are not given there. He is bitter. You only guess while watching the scene, it is necessary for the language ignorant audience to know the correct dialogue. However, Sara has worked hard to portray Rinku’s individuality. The special attraction of the film is the performance of Dhanush. He is perfect for the character. He has lived the simplicity, innocence, resentment and duality of Vishu with great vigor. Despite the weak script, he captivates with his performance. Akshay Kumar’s scope in the film is limited. However, he is an integral part of the story. Ashish Verma should find a strong character for himself other than the hero’s friend. The rest of the film’s chakachak song is Karnpriya.
